Description

This is a large original and quite outstanding oil on masonite of boats in a harbor by well-known artist Charles C. Gruppé (b. 1928). On the back is the original Artist Card "Charles Gruppe Studio" with Title en verso ("Harbor with Lighthouse").

This painting, likely of Gloucester Harbor, is exceptional example of Gruppe's style and technique. It is signed lower right. It is in very good condition with minor surface soiling, measuring 24" x 36". Framed it measures 39.5"w x 27.5"h x .75"d. The green frame is vintage and I am guessing the original one for the painting.

The colors are beautiful pinks, greens, lavender and more. It has a Palm Beach quality about it even though supposedly it was a setting up North.

Charles C. Gruppé comes from one of America's very respected East Coast families of artists. Gruppé is the grandson of artist Charles P. Gruppé and the nephew of famous Rockport artist Emile Gruppé . His grandfather, Charles Paul Gruppé (1860-1940), studied and painted in Europe until moving to Rochester, New York. His uncles, sculptor Karl (1893-1982) and painter Emile (1896-1978) were successful and widely recognized for their work. Charles's father Paulo Gruppé was a gifted cellist.

Listed in Who's Who in American Art, Charles Gruppé studied at Yale University and at Columbia, as well as at the National University of Mexico. He earned a Masters of Fine Art from Columbia University while on a fellowship there. He was also awarded a Fulbright Fellowship Grant and studied in Italy where he received an Italian Government Award. His work is collected worldwide.

Gruppé has exhibited at Allied Artists of America, Silvermine Guild, Provincetown Art Association, Cape Cod Art Association, Butler Museum, Hudson Valley Art Association, Salmagundi Club, and many other venues. He has won countless awards for his work such as the Hudson Valley Art Association Award and his paintings are in collections worldwide.

*** ABOUT ANTIQUE, VINTAGE AND USED ITEMS: Please keep in mind that this piece is a used and/or vintage or later period piece and is sold in "as-is" condition. Buyers of antiques know the character of old items is often exhibited in the unique way it shows its age. We try to fully describe each piece in an attempt to let you know exactly what you will be receiving. To further clarify each item, we include detailed and closeup photos that frequently exaggerate wear and tear in a way that is not representative of how the item will appear under typical casual observation in your home or elsewhere. Closeup photos often cause the finish color to appear lighter or surface imperfections to appear larger or more severe than when the item is viewed directly.
